What Happens to the Chips and the Hole?

Grinding produces a surprising volume of chips — a 24-inch stump can fill a wheelbarrow several times over. You have two choices, and we do either at no difference in price: we backfill the hole with the chips and mound it slightly to allow for settling, or we haul the chips off and leave the hole ready for topsoil.

If you plan to sod or seed the spot, ask us to haul the chips. Wood chips tie up nitrogen as they break down and will visibly stunt new grass for a season. Fresh topsoil over a cleared hole gives you grass in weeks instead of next year.

Plan the right stump grinding scope

Grinding, excavation, or leaving the stump

Grinding uses a rotating cutter to reduce the visible stump and some of its upper roots to chips. It is usually less disruptive than excavating the entire root mass, but it does not remove every root. Full excavation may be considered when a foundation, hardscape, or construction project requires the space. Leaving a stump to decay can be reasonable when it is away from use areas and the owner accepts the appearance and long timeline. The right choice depends on the intended use of that exact spot.

Oklahoma State University Extension discusses grinding, decay, grubbing and other options. Its guidance notes that grinding is comparatively quick, whereas leaving a stump to rot takes time. Burning or chemical approaches have hazards and restrictions; homeowners should not assume those are acceptable at their address. Explain whether the tree died of disease and what you plan to plant next so the contractor can discuss the implications.

Grinding a stump below the lawn surface may allow grass to be re-established after chips are removed and soil is added. A future walkway, fence post, or replacement tree can require a different depth or additional root work. Tell the estimator the final use and ask exactly what depth and area the machine can reach. A large surface-root network may need a separate scope.

Access and underground features

Stump grinder width varies. Measure gates, walkways, steps, and the route to the stump. Identify irrigation, landscape lighting, drainage, gas, water, electric, and communications lines. Ask how the operator will manage chips and protect windows, paving and nearby plantings. A photograph showing the stump, surrounding space and access path helps with initial discussion but may not reveal subsurface obstacles.

The quoted price can vary with diameter, root flare, number of stumps, access, disposal and restoration. Confirm whether multiple stumps are priced together, whether the tree is already cut sufficiently low, and whether a tall remnant requires additional chainsaw work. A low grinding quote may leave a large mound of chips and no backfill, while another price includes disposal and leveling.

What happens to chips and roots afterward?

Grinding mixes wood chips with soil and leaves a volume that can exceed the original hole. If you want lawn, ask whether chip removal, clean topsoil, grading and seed are included. Wood chips used as mulch should not be packed against the trunk of another living tree. If you want to plant in the same area, the old root system and grinding residue may constrain the new planting hole.

Some species can send sprouts from living roots after the trunk is cut. Grinding the central stump does not always prevent root sprouts elsewhere. Discuss the species and a follow-up plan if regrowth is a concern. Do not apply herbicide casually around desirable plants or drainage routes; follow the product label and local guidance if treatment is appropriate.
